The last day of January is at hand. I better use it wisely. This day began with a trip to the gym and a 6am spinning class. I worked really hard and my legs are rubbery from the pedalling. There are no more spin classes here until Monday, so I worked extra hard. I am heading out to do laundry so that I am all done by 11am when the auto shop opens. There must be 6 loads or more of laundry to do and today is the last day the laundry mat here on base is open. They are closing it due to "high operating costs and lack of usage". I sure will miss it.
I am going to sand down my rear quaterpanel body armor so I can paint it. These body armor plates screw into inserts in the body and there was rust at the screw holes bubbling under the paint when I purchased the vehicle. The right rear armor plate got deeply scratched a few weeks ago at Truckhaven and I realized the paint is peeling away from the primer. There must have been wax or something on the primer when it was painted that kept the paint from adhering properly. I should bead-blast all the body armor and treat the metal to get rid of the rust before it pits the metal too deeply. I guess I'll see how much work this one is to clean up and see if I want to take on the others right now.

Honey and I are hanging out at the camper while Gerry works on his jeep. Today is an absolutely gorgeous day. Our walk this morning was the first in quite a while that I didn't need a jacket. The sun was warm and the slight breeze reminded me it is winter. The seals were out in large numbers enjoying the sun on the sandy shores of the estuary. The pelicans and cormorants stretched lazily in the sun and a few seals swam curiously through the water. I think they have the right idea....well, the lounging in the sun part sounds like a good plan. I'll spend some time reading outside today.

Today was a great day. Gerry and I started off with an early morning spin class and had a great workout on the bikes. Afterwards we went back to our camper and made breakfast. I cleaned up a bit and took the dogs for a walk before heading over to my brother's house. He drove me down to the garment distric of Los Angeles. There were lots and lots of stores with everything from fabric, rugs, comforters, clothing, beads, and nic-nacs. I bought two rugs for the camper and some fabric for a small tablecloth. Timmy bought a cool nutcracker rug for himself and one of my rugs as a house-warming present. The drive home was relatively light on traffic and we were back at Timmy's house at about 3pm. We decided on a snack of sushi at a local restauraunt and then drove out to my spot on the ocean for enchiladas, mexican casserole, and corn. I really enjoyed hanging out with my brother. Hopefully we can do it more often.

The storm blew through this morning, leaving crisp, clean air. The surf is still pretty high and is a pleasure to watch. The waves come in sets, with some sets quite a bit larger than others. We walked on the beach this morning and noticed the waves eroded away a good section of the sand, uncovering part of a whale and various metal pieces. The road out to the point got flooded during the night and has lots of drift wood spewn about. There won't be much traffic on that road until it's cleaned up. There are still large puddles of water about in the campground with at least one campsite flooded. The next two days are supposed to be clear, so the standing water should be gone before the next storm hits on Thursday. It's great to see so much rain out here and a real joy to see green on the hills surrounding Camarillo. We are heading into town shortly to bring our pet carrier over to my niece for her cats. She is taking them to the vet tomorrow morning to be fixed. I'm going down to LA tomorrow with my brother to browse around the garmet district. He has some stores he likes to buy rugs and fabric at so we're going to look for things for my new motorhome. I'm looking forward to spending time with Timmy. Gerry is planning to work on his engine tomorrow and hopes to get the heads from the engine shop.

We spent this am relaxing and playing with the dogs. They enjoyed a long walk outside during a break in the rain. When the auto shop openned on base, we headed down there in my jeep. Gerry worked on his engine while I started taking the doors apart. The right rear door handle was very hard to open and works great after we adjusted the location of the mechanisms inside the door. The drivers window makes a crunching noise when wound up and turns out to be due to a missing piece that results in some parts temporarily hanging up and then forcing apart. The automatic door locks also don't work properly and could be due to gooped-up mechanisms or more likely worn solenoids. I tried cleaning the mechanisms with no effect so the next step is to look into new solenoids. The old ones are riveted into the door, so will need to get drilled out for replacement. I put it back together for now and settled for improving the right rear door latch.
We ate pot roast for dinner and then watched Oceans Thirteen. Next Sunday will be the super bowl. I am excited about seeing New England play New York. We will probably watch it here at our camper. Go New England!

I had a nice visit with my mom last night. When she arrived home from teaching, I was on her doorstep reading the paper. The rain had abated and it was pleasant to sit on the bricks in the few sun rays that broke through the clouds. After spending some time at her house we went shopping. She didn't buy anything, but I got a couple of frames and mats for the photos I wanted to mount. I chose a picture of river-rocks (okay, really lake-rocks, but they look like river-rocks) for the dining area and a seal picture for the other side of the table. I have space to put up a few more in the motorhome. After shopping we came back to my motorhome for a relaxing evening of snacks, wine, coversation, and soup. I drove her back out to her car and felt very happy as I drove back to my camper. Great day!
Today will be a great day too. The skies are fairly clear out here at the ocean and the waves are no longer chocolate-brown from the rains. Another storm is supposed to roll in this afternoon and be even more punishing than the previous round of storms. The last round included tornados here are the base and Ventura as well as freezing rain and snow at fairly low elevations. Highway 5 closed down with heavy snow on the "grapevine" and countless other roads suffered temporary closures from the rains. We had a good pounding out here at the beach and our new motorhome held up well. A couple windows had a little leakage along the sills from the side-ways blowing downpours. I shall enjoy the sun this morning and our drive to Lancaster to pick up a part for Gerry's jeep.

Today is a run-errands day and I hope to meet up with my mom later on to go shopping. She is planning on coming over for dinner and I am excited to show her my new camper. The rain is heavy off-and-on and I hope we are lucky today with the rain as we're out and about.

We went grocery shopping today and picked up a bunch of food for our fridge and freezer. We could never have bought this much in our old camper. Tonight it was beef ribs for dinner, baked in our convection oven. We had a baked potato and fresh green beans also. This morning was the most awesome rainbow. I was out walking the dogs at 6:30am and around 7am I noticed two rainbows starting, side-by-side. Over the next 15 minutes as I headed back towards the campground they grew in vibrance and reflected in the water of the estuary. I wished I had my good camera along the walk to try and capture one of the white herons with the reflected rainbow behind it. It really was a mangificent sight and set my mood to positive for the day.

I a sitting in my sister's car in Filmore while she interviews for an apartment in town. This is for a special lower-income project in Camarillo that she hopes to get into while she finishes school. I have been watching a new heat/air-conditioning unit be brought onto the roof of one of the old buildings in town. I judge it's the post office by the mail trucks parked out back. First a crane lifted the old one off and then lifted the new one up. It was fun to watch, but now the workers are installing it and I can't see their activity. It's cloudy and cool, but hasn't rained on me today. The ominous clouds threaten to let loose at any time. This morning Gerry and I went spinning at 6am and then went back to the camper for breakfast and showers. I made breakfast burritos with a little bacon, sundried tomatoes, onions, potatoes, eggs, cheese, and salsa. Then we went over to Tina's house and picked up the packages for Gerry. Tina was heading out to Filmore, so I came along for the drive. Today is going to be a lazy day for me. I think I'll read when I get back to my camper.

The rain is coming down outside my window. I feel like singing "rain drops keep falling on my head". Today was a good day and I happily watch the moon's reflection on the ocean's waves, knowing the day was full and tomorrow will be here soon. We worked out in the AM, ran lots of errands into the afternoon, wired internet in the motorcoach, and installed a wireless router before I headed out to do laundry. Gerry made delicious pea soup for dinner and the meal warmed the dampness from my bones. Now I lay my head to rest and dram of foreign lands the ocean out my window touches.

We packed up this morning and drove to Point Mugu. We got here just as the sun was setting and set-up camp before having dinner. The drive went surprisingly smoothly. There was little traffic, probably because of the holiday, and we had no problems along the way. We had thought of staying at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, CA, but the main gate was fenced off and the base looked unused. There may have been an entrance with activity, but we decided to push for Ventura since it was only 2pm. I can hear the waves of the ocean crashing and I know I'll sleep good tonight.

Another successful day of 4wheeling. The jeeps did great, the drivers did great, and it was a warm, sunny day. The trails today were a bit harder than yesterday and our jeeps sailed over the obstacles
with no problems. We tuned in the playoff games on our Sirius satellite radio, which we mounted in my jeep for the day. It was great to hear the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots go at it for the AFC championship. The Patriots won and Gerry was so very happy. One more win and the Patriots will have a totally undefeated season with 19 straight wins.

We did the "tilted table" run today. The trails were pretty easy and we were glad for the three more challenging optional sections. One was Jamie's Crack and was a little loop up, around, and back down a side track. The next one was Bill's Hill, which was fun to do in reverse. The final obstacle was the Sand Dam, which a few of us raced up and over. My jeep couldn't make it up the very steepest part, but it was a lot of fun to try. After the run, we went back out to play on the sand more with a friend. It was fun and I am learning a lot about wheeling. I am really happy with how my jeep runs and performs. The next thing to work on is getting more steering, which I will do by modifying the brackets for the steering stabilizer so they don't interfere with the steering connecting rods. Tonight is the raffle and dinner. It's supposed to be quite cold so I'm going to bundle up. We're looking forward to the football games tomorrow.

January 18, 2008 - location: Superstition Mountains, CA
We arrived safely at the 4wheeling site last night after dark. The drive went smoothly and we hit dirt after dark. Since we didn't know where to go, we drove too far and ended up having to turn around past where most people bring their campers. We made it, though, and camped at the first flat spot we found after turning around. This morning we walked over to the camping area with all the jeeps and saw people starting to set-up for the 4wheeling event. We moved our rigs over and set-up camp before noon. I set to work on my jeep while Gerry did a few things to his. He helped me re-wire the CB as I needed to take the dash off and figure out what wire to use. I ended up using the same accessory-switched wire I used for my new radio antenna. Feeding the wires up through the dash wasn't much fun, but went fairly quickly and everything checked out okay before we put it back together.
We registered for the event and passed the safety inspection this afternoon. Registration was easy - pay money, tell them who you are and what you drive. Safety inspection was a breeze for us. We needed proof of insurance, emergency brake, cb radio, fire extinuisher, first aid kit, tow straps/winch, and a spare tire. After passing, Gerry and I decided to take our jeeps for a ride. We drove around to where we had to turn around yesterday and then hit the sand hills. My jeep did surprisingly poorly and I had to get a lot of speed to make it up things Gerry had no problem with. It turned out I had only 2WD. Once we realized the transfer case wasn't shifting, we raced back to camp and worked past dark to get it working. The transmission mount screws came loose and fell out, allowing the transmission to shift and misalign with the rod for shifting the tranfer case. Therefore, I only had 2WD despite the position the lever was in. The lever wasn't doing anything but floating. We got real lucky to find the two transmission screws on the shelf of the crossmember below the transmission and Gerry fought and fought to get them back in. Success was ours and it all works now. I was really worried for a while, but am glad to be back able to ride the trails tomorrow.

The work on my jeep didn't go as well as expected yesterday. We replaced the front brake calipers, twice. Well, the first time I put them on the wrong sides because the boxes were mismarked. We noticed when bleeding them and I had to swap them, which was easy. Now I know by the looks of it and don't have to rely on the boxes. Of course, I could have compared the parts to the old ones before I removed them, but didn't think to do that, either. The real problem arose when trying to bleed the back brakes. The bleeder screws were rusted solid and broke off when trying to loosen them. PB blasters didn't even do the trick. NAPA is getting us new calipers in this morning, which we thought would be easier than drilling and tapping the old calipers. Then I know I have new brakes all around and better stopping ability. We drainned the power steering fluid and found dark colored fluid that became milky yellow when flushing with a quart of fresh fluid. After putting it back together, the problems with the pump pressurizing and blowing fluid continued. We determined the steering is hanging up due to interferences with the new parts we mounted. This decreases my full range of turning and we adjusted the stops out for now to limit my steering. I won't know how bad this will affect me wheeling until I hit the trail. I'll give it a test today after I put the new calipers on, bleed the brakes, and re-mount the tires. There also seems to be a problem elsewhere in the steering system, most likely in the steering box. Gerry has a spare box that he is planning on using on his jeep which we will try on mine if needed at Superstition. We also adjusted the toe-in, toe-out to be 1/16" toe in, or at least as close to that as practical with using a tape measure.
Well, Gerry ran into NAPA to get my parts in his jeep, so I better get to the vacuuming and clean-up I want to do here. We are coming back to the camper before noon to pack up and move on to Superstition Mnts if all goes well. Check out the pictures of our jeeps.

Our move to the new campsite went well. We stopped at the flying J on the way and filled up with diesel at $3.02 per gallon and propane at $2.79 per gallon. It's windy here and I hope it dies down before we leave tomorrow. It's not fun to drive these big campers in the wind. Today we'll be working on getting my emergency brake installed on the cherokee. I also have new front calipers that we'll put on while we have the system apart. There were teflon inserts missing on one side and the rubber boots on the other side, so Gerry had opted to buy new calipers because they were only $5 more than the parts and were in stock, where we would have had to order the parts. I am also thinking of changing the power steering pump because it has been giving me problems leaking and blowing the cap off since I got it. It is also noisy and occasionally gives me trouble steering. The fluid inside is dark and a little gritty, so I am at least going to drain the system. Hopefully the steering box is good, because I don't have a spare one. Well, off to work on my jeep.

January 15, 2008 - location: Erransburg, AZ
Today we leave this campground and head to where we can work on the jeep. My cherokee needs to have the parking brake switch installed before the Superstition Mnt run next weekend. These organized 4-wheeling events have inspections for vehicles in order to register for trail runs. We think the only thing left for my vehicle is a parking brake. There isn't a stock parking brake because the rear Dana 60 axle has calipers off a Monte Carlo front end and there is no place to connect the parking brake cable. We have two options. One is a switch made for drag racing and the other is a manual lock that works on the brake hydraulic lines. The negative is we have to run brake lines into the cab of the jeep. We are going to do the work tomorrow in a guys yard that does jeep work. He said we can work there and borrow tools if needed. Today we are moving to a campground across the river near his yard. Gerry will tow my jeep behind the motorhome and I'll drive our old rig over.

We spent the day in Blythe running errands. We bought auto parts, talked to the local jeep expert, got a new campsite for the next two nights, bought miscellaneous things we needed at the hardware store, and went grocery shopping. Then Gerry fixed a few things on the camper while I did laundry and started cleaning the old camper. I have the bathroom done now and will tackle the rest tomorrow. My goal is to have it all cleaned before we leave for Superstition Mnt trail run on Thursday. I figure there are about 6 hours of work and I'm finding it hard to make time to do it. I managed half an hour last night, but then had to come back for dinner and laundry. We made popcorn last night for the first time in our microwave. Gerry loves popcorn and loves being able to pop it so quick with the microwave that he made two bags last night. I think next time I should buy the low salt, low fat version, but what fun is that.

This was a productive day. I emptied out the old camper and moved everything into the new motorcoach. It seemed like a lot of stuff and I was worried about finding places for everything, and managed to find storage space with several cupboards left empty. I am amazed by how much storage was in our old camper. Gerry's brother and his wife came over for a visit. We chatted and watched the playoff game to see who will play New England next week. San Diego won and will face the Patriots for an exciting game. Gerry and I will be in the wilds of Superstition Mountain and hope to be able to watch the game. Our satellite radio should allow us to at least listen to it if no one has satellite t.v. After tonight we only have one more night here, so I better do laundry tomorrow. We are also heading into Blythe, CA for miscellaneous parts and a bunch of groceries. Our refrigerator is bare, but we still have canned goods that could feed us for a few days if needed. Tonight I made chicken in a mushroom soup base with taragon, garlic, and pepper. This was served over brown rice with broccoli on the side. That's it for the meat and veggies in our fridge/freezer. We are really happy with our camper, even though we find little things to fix. I think Gerry is actually thrilled when he finds little things to fix and he runs off to take care of little adjustments. He's getting to know the rig and is real glad the previous owners left the manuals and service records. We like our new home and even the dogs seem to look forward to coming inside. It's home to us now and I think we will enjoy the desert more when we are 4-wheeling. This will be a better place to come back to and we can invite people over, too.

January 12, 2008 - location: Erransburg, AZ
This morning we awoke in our new motorcoach. The bed was comfortable and we slept good after a long day and evening. We left Camarillo before 8am and headed to Los Angeles. There was traffic here and there along the way as we traversed the city on our way to Palm Desert. We stopped at Camper World in San Bernadino to buy a CB for my jeep and then drove out I-10, arriving an hour early at the RV dealer. We went out for a sandwich at a great sub/bakery shop just down the street called "The Kid's Business", or TKB for short.
The walk through with the RV had a few hic-ups with things that either didn't work or the guy didn't know. We left there generally satisfied a couple hours later than expected. The drivers from the transport company towed their car behind our RV and drove to Arizona while we followed in our two vehicles. The transfer in AZ went smoothly and we reached our campground around 8pm. The place we're staying at for the next few nights is a private campground on the Colorado River. It is part of a "members-only" club and we are here on a 4-night free stay from the marketing group for the club. We went to a sales pitch meeting today and opted not to join because we just don't think it will fit our lifestyle. It might be different if there was a place to work on our jeeps because we need a place to do repairs from the trail and upgrades where we can also plug-in and empty our holding tanks. That we get at the military bases, even though they may be a bit further from the spots we like to jeep.
After the sales pitch we went to see Gerry's brother in Brenda, about 30 minutes from here. We enjoyed seeing them and watched the New England Patriots beat the Jaguars. Tomorrow we plan to move more stuff into the new motorhome and then watch more football, hopefully with Gerry's brother and his wife, Nancy. They expect to drive over here and visit with us. Our first house guests.

I am excited about leaving this morning to pick up our new motorcoach. If all goes well, this will be our last morning in our old camper. There is a lot of cleaning out, setting up the new camper, and getting the old one ready for sale. We are going to sell the truck and slide-in camper. When we go 4x4ing, I'll drive my jeep and Gerry will drive the camper towing the trailer. It seems like a lot of stuff to haul down the road, but is needed to have the jeep adventures we want. This spring and summer we'll take shorter road trips and longer jeep-treks. I can hardly wait!

Gerry is going to work on his jeep today while I do laundry, clean out my jeep, and run errands. After breakfast of french toast, we plan to walk the dogs and then get to work on the day. Tomorrow will be an exciting day with taking delivery of our new motorcoach. We are excited and hope the dogs do well in the new camper.

This was a good day. We got our errands done, worked on my jeep, and had a nice dinner and evening with Timmy and my mom. Timmy made salmon that was delicious along with green beans, mushrooms, and crispy potato chunks. He is a good chef and I always enjoy his meals. My jeep now has all the steering modifications and we adjusted it for correct tracking. There are only three things left to do before our next 4-wheeling trek. I need to replace the rear taillight assembly, add a parking brake, and install a cb.

January 8, 2008 - location: Point Mugu NAS, CA
We had corned beef hash and eggs for breakfast this morning. It tasted so good and the dogs went bazzerk over it. We want to finish working on my jeep today and get laundry done. I need to buy a drill bit for the new track arm installation and a new U-joint to replace the one that cracked a cap during installation to the new axle shaft yesterday. Gerry is going to work on the license plate lights and the new tail light should arrive by UPS today. The hobby shop on base doesn't open until 11am, so we'll run out and get parts in the mean time. Tomorrow Gerry will work on his jeep. We feel like we're in a perpetual state of getting ready to go jeeping. I can't imagine doing anything else...except maybe jeeping.

January 7, 2008 - location: Point Mugu NAS, CA
Today was a bit of a disappointment in the shop. We couldn't put the new track arm on because the hobby shop didn't have a 9/16" drill bit. Also, the license plate led lights wouldn't work and we weren't sure why. They are either bad lights, or the ground isn't good. Today we'll put a voltmeter on the lines to see if the voltage is steady and try another light. It was getting late and we had to pick up the Dodge from the dealer in Oxnard, so we just left them not working. Fortunately, I didn't get stopped. I did get the front axle shafts put in, but cracked a cap on a U-joint when pressing it into the new WARN outer axle shaft. I put it in anyways and plan to replace it before going 4x4ing. Hopefully I'll get a new one tomorrow. I also changed the oil and am running Mobil 1 synthetic for now. I have always run AMSOIL in the past, but didn't try to hunt some down now. I put Valvoline synthetic gear oil in the differential when I put the axles in, which took a while to pump in with the litte plastic hand-pump that the hobby shop had. I couldn't just pour it in because the geometry of the steering interfered with the fill hole. Last week I changed out the cover on the diffential to the one TandJ makes, which is more durable for hitting/sliding over rocks.
We also did some shopping yesterday. We bought new Emeril Stainless Steel pots for our new camper. They also had a baking pan/bowl set at the Navy Exchange that we bought. I picked up plates at Costco and place mats at World Market. Now I need silverware, kitchen towels, rugs, and some photos for the wall. I have plenty of time to get it decorated, and am glad we have a few things to make our new home more cozy when we pick it up on Friday.

Today was a lazy day of rain and football. Gerry and I went over to my mom's house this morning to watch the games. I helped mom with christmas decoration removal and then did some grocery shopping while Gerry watched the games. I'm starting to feel better from my cold and think I'll be back to 90% by tomorrow. So, I guess it's off to the gym to work off the holiday fluff.

This day I spent mostly with my mom and enjoyed a relaxing morning with tea and chatting. We ran errands in the afternoon and I started scouting out things to buy for our new RV. Gerry thinks we'll be able to pick it up on Friday. I can hardly wait. The countdown has begun.

We made it back to Point Mugu and set-up camp yesterday afternoon. I was tired and we ended up with dinner at camp and a night of reading. Today we need to do some parts shopping and bring the Dodge in for brake service at the dealer. I am really looking forward to our new motorcoach, as it will be more like a home than our small rig now. We hope to be in it within a week.

January 3, 2008 - location: Perris Lake State Park, CA
We signed papers yesterday on a 40' deisel-pusher motorcoach. It's a '94, but in good shape and ready to roll. The dealership needs to bring it through service for a check-out before we can pick it up, so we'll head to Ventura for a few days and work on my jeep and Gerry's engine. It was getting late when we left, so rather than drive back through LA, we opted for camping at a state park along the way. This place has a reservoir, with no swimming allowed, and an o.k. campground. It's a bit expensive and really isn't set-up for rigs over 30 feet. The spaces also are a bit too close for our tastes, but it is relatively empty and we are happy we stopped. On to Ventura today.

It was a quite night here after everyone in our party left. A bunch of the motorbike group stayed around us, but many are clearing out today. We are about to pack up so we can head take our time going home and looking at motorhomes along the way. We saw dealerships along the route out and figured we'd take some time on our way home to stop in and see what they have.

Welcome to 2008 and Happy New Year!
We had a wonderful celebration here with the Desert Dawgs 4WD Club. We had a yummy pot luck and then hung out by the fire waiting for the New Year. They put together a really cool pyro-technic display with fireworks and explosions up on a hill over camp. We popped open some bottles of champagne for a toast and cheered in the New Year.
Folks are packing up and a bunch have already left. It looks like Gerry and I will be the only ones staying over another night. I will miss everyone and I really enjoyed the last few days. A few guys, including Gerry, went out on the trails this morning. I elected to stay back because I am fighting through a cold and can't drive with my jeep anyways. The quiet time here at camp is nice and I'm enjoying some extra rest. I've learned a lot since I've been here and know I have much more to learn that only driving will teach me. Gerry and I are going to beef up the Cherokee more on the front end and steering to make it strong enough to handle the beating I plan to give it while I learn how to "four-wheel".
