Excerpts from KimmyLand - at Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station

I was walking on the beach this morning with the dogs when the sun crested the mountains. The dull-lit sand became a depth of shadows with the low-lying sun. My shadow was huge and I looked 30 feet tall. As I walked back to camp, my shadow shrank and I knew the sun behind me was rising into the sky. It will be a warm day and the 30-foot Kimmy is prepared for it. The onslaught of weekenders here at the campground has begun. The children are having fun exploring the beach, tearing the starfish and mussels from the rocks and poking the baby seal that is resting on the beach. I intend to enjoy the day despite the anger I feel at the violation of the wildlife I so dearly love. I will wallow on the beach like the seals and the children, soaking up the sun and surf. Tomorrow is by birthday and I'm celebrating today, too.
I'll add more throughout the day, including photos of the baby seal.

There was a seal pup on the beach this morning. I saw it when I first went out with the dogs, but thought it was a dead seal that has been floating up on the beach after a high tide. After I walked the dogs, I went out with my camera to take photos of the seals in the waves. They were swimming back and forth along the beach and getting much closer than normal. It turned out they were there because of the young seal that was dragging itself up on the beach.

A group of pelicans flew by while I was watching the seal. It is amazing how close they get to the water without touching their long wingtips.
